Type of article: Article

Summary

The effect of refrigeration temperatures necessary for disinfestation of tropical fruit are discussed, in particular problems of chilling injury which vary according to cultivar. Symptoms are similar to those which occur from other stresses and injury. Some examples of chilling injury are given for a wide range of fruit. Controlled atmospheres are not an approved quarantine treatment for fruit fly in tropical or temperate fruit, although high CO2 and nitrogen atmospheres have been partially successful in controlling a wide variety of insects, albeit with loss of flavour and abnormal ripening patterns. Details are given for a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. G.R.S.
