Summary
This paper deals with safety requirements for the use of ammonia in refrigerating systems. At the beginning, important properties of ammonia and applications of this natural low-boiling fluid are summarized. The general safety requirements are defined with emphasis on the fire hazard and health hazards of ammonia. A very important aspect is the safety during installation of refrigerating plants. Configurations of direct and indirect ammonia cooling systems are described and safety requirements for machine rooms are given.
