Salt slurries as secondary refrigerant.
Author(s) : ANASTASE A., TARLEA G. M., INFANTE FERREIRA C. A., et al.
Summary
This study proposes hydrated salt slurries as a secondary fluid for large scale air-conditioning systems. It is expected that when this type of secondary fluid is used, the coefficient of performance of the related primary refrigeration cycle will improve significantly. A number of hydrated salt solutions have been considered but this study concentrates only on KNO3 salt slurries. The most crucial component of secondary fluid systems with crystal suspensions is the component in which the slurry is generated. For this reason this study will concentrate on the generator performance. The fluidized bed ice slurry generator model proposed by Meewisse (2004) and Pronk (2006) will be used to predict the heat and mass transfer processes that take place in the crystallizer. Also energetic and economic aspects will be considered. In comparison with conventional air-conditioning systems which use water as the secondary fluid, the proposed systems show significantly higher coefficients of performance. This is the result of higher evaporating temperatures and lower condensation temperatures. The phase change takes place at elevated temperatures and during the night time when the environmental temperature is lower.
