Summary

Ice slurry, a two-phase mixture of ice and water or aqueous solution, has high fluidity, thermal load following and thermal storage density and is expected cold utilization in various fields, such as storing fresh food and ice thermal storage system for leveling electrical load. In recent years, global warming and other environmental issues have become hot topics, requiring clean and energy efficient power supply measures. Therefore, an ice thermal storage system using ice slurry produces and stores ice slurry using electricity generated in the night, when electricity demand is low, and uses the cold heat of stored ice slurry in the daytime, when electricity demand is high, leveling electrical load. Ice thermal storage system is used in the cooling and air conditioning system of large buildings, such as buildings and commercial facilities, and provides advantages such as increased cooling capacity and savings on electricity costs. However, ice slurry may lose its advantages of fluidity and system efficiency due to cohesion phenomenon, which occurs when ice particles attach to each other due to the effects of gravity and buoyancy over time in ice storage area, and Ostwald ripening, which occurs when larger ice particle take in smaller ice particle due to differences in surface energy, increasing the size of the ice particles. It is necessary to clarify and control this problem of cohesion in order to establish a more efficient system. In this study, we aimed to prevent the cohesion phenomenon. We added poly sodium acrylate (PSA), which has the effect of preventing the growth of ice particles, to ice slurry and considered the effect of ice particle’s cohesion when ice slurry is stored for a long time. We found that the crushing force increases from 1 hour to 6 hours of ice storage time and then continues to increase slowly from 8 hours to 12 hours of ice storage time. PSA is a superabsorbent polymer with bridged structure, and when water molecules are contained within the bridged structure, PSA molecules inflate like a balloon. Due to this principle, it is considered that PSA absorbs water molecules in ice slurry and creates a layer of net shape between the ice particles, the layer created by PSA acts as a buffer, and the crushing force increases compared to pure water only.
