Scenarios for engineering headered safety relief vent systems.

Number: 0795

Author(s) : REINDL D., JEKEL T.

Summary

Industrial refrigeration systems commonly utilize a headered vent system to safely convey refrigerant discharging from one or more pressure relief valves to an appropriate terminal location. Larger headered pressure relief vent systems will have twenty (20) or more connected pressure relief valves making analysis of the vent system challenging. Appropriately sizing individual branch lines as well as common sections of a relief vent header is essential to ensure the safe and reliable operation of all pressure relief devices. This paper introduces the concept of credible relief scenarios that lead to one or more pressure relief devices simultaneously actuating. For each relief scenario, the vent system is analyzed to ensure proper relief device function.
