Summary

THE APPLICATION OF SCROLL COMPRESSOR TO THE RESIDENTIAL AIR CONDITIONING AND HEAT PUMP MARKETS HAS GENERATED A VARIETY OF COMPRESSOR DESIGN APPROACHES. THE PAPER REVIEWS BOTH SPECIAL DESIGN NEEDS OF THIS APPLICATION AND UNIQUE SCROLL DESIGN CONCEPTS USED TO ADDRESS THESE NEEDS. DESIGN CONCEPT DISCUSSIONS INCLUDE: SCROLL COMPLIANCE, RADIAL AND AXIAL ; HIGHPRESSURE VERSUS LOW PRESSURE SHELL ; AND BEARING SYSTEMS. SCROLL COMPRESSOR TECHNOLOGY, IN COMPARISON TO OTHER POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT TYPES, ARE OUTLINED IN TERMS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY, NOISE AND VIBRATION, DURABILITY AND FIELD APPLICATION. THE PERFORMANCE LEVELS GIVEN IN THE PAPER SIGNIFICANTLY SURPASS EXISTING PRODUCTS. IN THE CASE OF RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS, THE SCROLL EFFICIENCY GAIN IS 7 TO 10% AND THE NOISE LEVEL REDUCTION IS 4 TO 6 DECIBELS. FUTURE SCROLL DEVELOPMENTWILL LIKELY YIELD FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS IN BOTH EFFICIENCY AND NOISE WITH PROJECTED ENERGY BELS. AT THIS STAGE, THERE IS GOOD REASON TO BE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE FUTURE GROWTH OF THIS TECHNOLOGY.
