Summary

A framework programme covering several years and concerning all community actions, including demonstration actions, in the research and technological development field hereafter referred to as the "fifth framework programme," has been decided on for the 1998-2002 period. The maximum overall funding of this framework programme by the European Community is 14,833 million ecus. Among new orientations are the following: preservation of the ecosystem, promotion of sustainable energy, development and supply of cleaner, more competitive and more diversified energy.
