Selecting liquid line driers for alternative refrigerants.

Summary

In general, the new HFC refrigerants and compatible lubricants are very much more hygroscopic than CFCs and mineral oils. It is essential therefore that the refrigerant liquid line driers are efficient. The molecular sieve 4A-XH6 has a high water capacity but some attrition problems. XH9 is stronger but with a lower water capacity. A manufacturer advises that 4A-XH6 driers should have a compacting spring or plug of XH9 beads. Alternatively a molecular sieve core block has now been developed. These suggestions have been tested rigorously with the new refrigerants and lubricants concerned. D.W.H.
