Summary

The human brain is a very delicate organ, so it is very important to minimize neurological damage as early as during the baby's birth. Intrapartum hypoxaemia (oxygen deficiency) dramatically disturbs the brain's homeostasis, and this most energy-consuming organ needs a large amount of oxygen. Biochemical processes caused by the lack of oxygen are very dangerous, especially for a developing nervous system. Hypothermia (cooling down below a certain temperature) slows these processes down or even prevents them. This neuroprotective action makes selective cooling of the brain a very interesting and important issue. See also this Bulletin, references 2010-0956 and 0957.
