Summary
Biochemical processes caused by the lack of oxygen are very dangerous, especially for a developing nervous system. Hypothermia (cooling down below a certain temperature) slows these processes down or even prevents them. This neuroprotective action makes selective cooling of the brain a very interesting and important issue. These topics were discussed in the first part of the paper (see this issue of the Bulletin, reference 2010-0955). In the second part (see reference 2010-0956), the technical requirements and design of the cooling system were presented. After technical and operation analysis of proposed solutions, the hybrid system was selected. Moreover, heat flux in the upper part of the baby's head was estimated. In this part, the design of the hybrid system is presented, The cooling unit consists of three systems: water jacket with forced water circulation, set of thermoelectric modules and cooling loop for the hot sides of the modules. Each system is described along with the main elements selected. The investment cost is estimated.
