Summary

The human brain is a very delicate organ, so it is very important to minimize neurological damage as early as during the baby's birth. lntrapartum hypoxaemia (oxygen deficiency) disturbs the brain's homeostasis, and this most energy consuming organ needs a large amount of oxygen. Biochemical processes caused by the lack of oxygen are very dangerous, especially for a developing nervous system. Hypothermia (cooling down below a certain temperature) slows these processes down or even prevents them. This neuroprotective effect makes selective cooling of the brain a very interesting and important issue. These topics were discussed in the first part of the paper (see this Bulletin, reference 2010-0955). In this second part the technical requirements and design of the cooling system are presented. After technical and operation analysis of the proposed solutions, the hybrid system has been selected. Heat flux in the upper part of the baby's head is estimated.
