SHIPPING CONDITIONS FOR BUTTERCUP SQUASH EXPORTS FROM NEW ZEALAND TO JAPAN.

Author(s) : BEEVER D. J.

Summary

EXPORTS OF BUTTERCUP SQUASH HAVE GROWN RAPIDLY SINCE THEY STARTED FIVE YEARS AGO AND NOW REPRESENT THE FOURTH MOST VALUABLE FRESH HORTICULTURAL PRODUCT EXPORTED. IN THE PAST THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS OF VERY POOR OUT-TURN CONDITION FOR SOME SQUASH SENT BY REFRIGERATED CONTAINER. EARLY TRIALS INDICATED THAT STORAGE CONDITIONS ON BOARD MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE POOR OUT-TURN. COMPARISONS ARE MADE BETWEEN VARIOUS TYPES OF PACKAGING IN REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS AS WELL AS CONDITIONS EXPERIENCED BY LOADS SENT NON-REFRIGERATED. THE EFFECT ON OUT-TURN QUALITY OF THESE SHIPPING METHODS IS DISCUSSED.
