COLD-DISINFESTATION OF FRUIT (ORANGES) IN CONTAINERS: A STATIC TRIAL.

Summary

BECAUSE OF QUARANTINE REQUIREMENTS IT IS POSSIBLE TO HOLD FRUIT AT LOW TEMPERATURES IN ORDER TO CONTROL QUEENSLAND FRUIT FLY. THIS PROCEDURE REQUIRES THAT ALL FRUIT ARE MAINTAINED NEAR TO THEIR FREEZING POINTS FOR 2 TO 3 WEEKS. A STATIC TEST WAS CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO ASCERTAIN WHETHER THE FRUIT CAN BE TREATED IN SUCH A WAY IN REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS. THE RESULTS WERE CONCLUSIVE, HOWEVER, ONLY CONTAINERS WITH HIGH AIR FLOW RATES CAN BE USED. THE FRUIT SHOULD BE PACKED IN NON-VENTED CARTONS AND THEY SHOULD BE PRECOOLED.
