Short-term and long-term high carbon dioxide treatments for insect disinfestation of flowers and leafy vegetables.

Summary

Short-term (hours to days) treatments with high CO2 concentration (40-100%) and long term (at low temperature during usual storage and transit periods) treatments with moderate CO2 concentration (10-20%) were tested on lettuce, broccoli, roses and carnations at various temperatures ranging from 0 to 20 deg C. Insect mortality was tested in similar atmospheres at 0 to 48 deg C. Various treatment combinations were effective in achieving complete insect kill before the development of phytotoxic symptoms. Under moderate CO2 concentration, insects (thrips) could be killed in as little as 7 days, although some typical mortality was achieved by 10-14 days (aphids). Under high CO2 concentration, complete mortality was consistently achieved at 0 deg C with 80-100% CO2 within 12 hours.
