The paper examines problems associated with inadequacies of design and/or specification and the synergistic effect of these on the occupants of the buildings. It looks at the building from its conception through to realization and the role of the various participants in the trade-offs made during this process. The term "sick building syndrome" is defined, and some examples provided.
