Summary

Further energy savings in household refrigerators can be made only by increasing insulation efficiency. The authors report on tests carried out incorporating silica based vacuum insulation panels, into doors and walls of four types of cabinet. The panels are of maximum size 800 x 600 x 25 mm composed of silica compressed to a board, sealed in a gas and water proof film and then evacuated to a pressure of 100 pascals. Such panels were arranged in the existing thickness of cabinet structure then sealed in place but foaming polyurethane in the remaining space. The foaming agent was R11. Tests showed up to 25% energy saving depending on panel coverage and type of cabinet. The greatest saving was in a combined fridge/freezer, closely followed by cabinet and chest freezers. D.W.H.
