Sizing CHP in new buildings.

Summary

The benefits of CHP (Combined Heat and Power) are applicable to new buildings but there is no established guidance available to determine the loads so that CHP can be correctly sized. The paper discusses the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme project to investigate the barriers and solutions to correctly sizing CHP. The current debate centres around the methodologies used when sizing, and the merit of installing optimum size CHP units with intentional dumping of heat in order to maximize economic and environmental savings.
