Summary

A TEPID WATER SPRAY SYSTEM WAS USED FOR MELTING SNOW ON THE TRACKS ON WHICH TRAINS RUN AT 210 KM/H IN NORTHERN JAPAN. A HEAT PUMP, DRIVEN BY A DIESEL ENGINE USING WELL WATER AS THE HEAT SOURCE WAS DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO SAVE BOTH ENERGY AND REDUCE OPERATING COSTS. IN ADDITION, THE HEAT FROM THE EXHAUST GASES AND THE COOLING OF THE ENGINE WERE USED FOR WARMING THE SPRAY WATER. THE PAPER DESCRIBES THIS SYSTEM AND THE PERFORMANCE OBTAINED.
