Solar energy heating and cooling equipment development in Algeria: perspectives and outcomes.

Summary

Interest in solar energy started half a century ago in Algeria, but the huge supply and the relatively low cost of oil and natural gas made the development of solar energy applications an almost impossible task economically. Now, with the new environmental restrictions, the scarcity and the relatively high cost of fossil energy sources have ensured that solar energy applications are attracting interest once again, and several research projects are underway. Solar energy potential is very important in Algeria, with an average global radiation of 5 to 7 kwh/m2.day in the northern parts of the country. Studies are underway to develop small-scale domestic and commercial heating and cooling equipment.
