Summary

THE STABILITY OF THE AQUEOUS SORBITOL IN THE GLASSY STATE HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED BY DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY. THE CRITICAL WARMING RATES FOR 55, 60 AND 65% SORBITOL SOLUTIONS WERE DETERMINED AND COMPARED WITH GLASSES COMPOSED OF OTHER CRYOPROTECTIVE AGENTS. THE RESULTS SUGGEST THAT AQUEOUS SORBITOL GLASS IS LEAST STABLE AMONG THE GLASSES OF VARIOUS CRYOPROTECTIVE AGENTS THAT HAVE BEEN EXAMINED AND THAT AN APPROXIMATION OF THE DEPENDANCE OF THE AMOUNT OF ICE FORMED DURING DEVITRIFICATION SHOULD BE USED TO ESTIMATE THE CRITICAL WARMING RATE.
