Summary

The recent heat pipe research and development activities in CIS countries (former Soviet Union) are mainly associated with the development of copper/water, aluminium/ammonia, stainless steel/water, stainless steel/ammonia, stainless steel/sodium heat pipes and mild steel/water thermosyphons of high heat transfer performance for terrestrial and space applications. Nowadays more than 20 institutions and establishments are engaged in R&D on heat pipes and heat pipe-based devices in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova. There are mainly practical heat pipe applications in space and terrestrial programmes, for example heat pipe heat exchangers for heat recovery systems, electronic cooling devices, industrial and domestic heaters and coolers, air-conditioning systems, refrigerators, dryers, solar collectors and electric motors. Recently two-phase heat transfer devices such as LHP and CPL, flexible, centrifugal and micro heat pipes are being successfully used.
