Summary

Measurements of the static forces were performed for various types of superconducting magnetic bearings at liquid nitrogen temperature. It was found that the stiffness of the superconducting bearing was rather small, but both the electromagnetic forces and the stiffness could be increased by using a combination of a thrust and radial bearing. The stiffness could be increased by using the attractive force due to flux pinning. Based on these measurements, a practical superconducting magnetic bearing was designed and constructed, in which a 2.4 kg rotor could rotate at 33,000 rpm.
