Summary

SWEDES FROM SEVEN GROWERS WERE HARVESTED BY HAND IN SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER. THE ROOTS WERE GIVEN DIFFERENT TREATMENTS BEFORE COLD STORAGE UNTIL APRIL. AT THAT TIME THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF SALEABLE ROOTS (84 %) WAS OBTAINED AMONG THOSE WHICH WERE STORED WITHOUT ANY LEAVES AND WITH AS LITTLE DAMAGE AS POSSIBLE. CUTTING OF ROOT TIPS AND SIDEROOTS AT HARVEST HAD NO EFFECT ON THE STORAGE RESULT. DAMAGE CAUSED BY DROPPING ROOTS WITH 50-100 MM LEAF STALKS FROM A HEIGHT OF 1.5 M, WAS REDUCED IF NO ROOTS HAD BEEN CUT. LEAVING 50-100 MM LEAF STALKS ON THE ROOTS RESULTED IN MORE ROT AT THE LEAF BASES. DROPPING GAVE ROT ELSEWHERE ON THE ROOTS. ROOTS FROM SOME GROWERS STORED WELL EVEN IF THEY WERE DROPPED FROM 1.5 M ONTO A CONCRETE FLOOR, BUT THIS WAS ONLY THE CASE FOR ROOTS WITHOUT LEAVES.
