Summary

IMPROVEMENTS UNDERTAKEN OVER THE YEARS HAVE REDUCED THE FUEL OIL CONSUMPTION IN JAPANESE TUNA-FISHING BOATS BY 30%. THE IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDE BETTER INSULATION OF FISH HOLDS, MORE COMPACT COMPRESSORS, BETTER COMPRESSOR OIL FILTERING AND BETTER CONTROL. CONTROL NOW INCLUDES SPEED CONTROL OF BOTH COMPRESSORS AND AIR CIRCULATING FANS AND THE USE OF ELECTRONIC EXPANSION VALVES AND DATA LOGGERS. SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDE THE USE OF SODIUM CHLORIDE BRINE IMMERSION FREEZING INSTEAD OF AIR BLAST FREEZING, AND LOWER HOLDING TEMPERATURES HAVE IMPROVED FISH QUALITY. D.W.H.
