Studies on thermal stratification for comfort air conditioning.

Author(s) : RAO G. V., MAIYA M. P.

Summary

Thermal stratification is due to variation in air density with its temperature. While stratified air conditioning is desirable for high ceiling buildings to reduce the cooling load in summer, it is necessary for cabins without ceiling. Such a test cabin is built for experimental study of air stratification as influenced by air movement above the cabin partitions, bottom air leak, supply air direction, and light height and wattage. Their quantitative effects on thermal stratification are presented and explained leading to some qualitative conclusions.
