Summary
TWENTY-EIGHT CASES (29 EYES) OF CLINICAL PENETRATING KERATOPLASTIES WERE PERFORMED WITH HUMAN CADAVER CORNEAS CRYOPRESERVED FOR 9 TO 473 DAYS, AVERAGING 112 DAYS. AFTER A FOLLOW-UP PERIOD OF 1.5 TO 27 MONTHS, 17 OF THE CORNEAL GRAFTS REMAINED CLEAR, 5 SEMI-TRANSPARENT, AND 7 CLOUDY. A TOTAL OF 22 EYES HAD THEIR VISUAL ACUTENESS IMPROVED SIGNIFICANTLY. THE RESULTS OF THE PAPER SHOW THAT THE KEY FACTOR OF SUCCESSFUL PENETRATING KERATOPLASTIES WITH CRYOPRESERVED CORNEAS DEPENDS ON THE SURVIVAL RATE OF THE ENDOTHELIAL CELLS OF DONOR GRAFTS AND THAT THE SIMPLIFIED < TWO-STEP > CRYOFREEZING METHOD CREATED BY THE AUTHORS IS WORTH USING IN CLINICAL PRACTICE.
