Study on the segmentation of cryomicroscopic images of individual cells.

Summary

Cryomicroscopy is an important tool in the field of cryobiology. The efficiency and reproducibility of cryomicroscopic investigation depend on the techniques used to handle the images. However, up until now there has been no general method to extract information from the blurry cell images during freezing and thawing. In the paper, a novel method of thresholding segmentation is proposed. The threshold was determined on a simple statistics of gray-gradient histogram. The effect of this method was compared with a traditional method. As a result, the new method works better than the traditional one for digital images of frozen cells.
