Summary

Model predictive control is a very promising method to increase the energy flexibility of refrigerating systems using a chilled-water tank as thermal energy storage. However, its dissemination in real-world systems, e. g. for air-conditioning in non-residential buildings is very sparse. Motivation of this work is to develop recommendations for the necessary complexity of predictions used for MPC through investigations on an experimental test bed. For an MPC strategy presented in previous work, this contribution investigates – based on reference measurements of the test bed – the prediction accuracy of storage tank models of different complexity. Furthermore, it is shown how the number of available storage temperature sensors for determining the starting point of the prediction affects the model accuracy. The comparison with the measured reference shows that the discretisation of the tank volume influences the prediction accuracy in the same way as the necessary sensor instrumentation.
