Summary

Although superconductivity is scarcely used any more for power generators, it is still quite advantageous for equipment on trains and ships. The author reviews the current state technology, including a hybrid solution combining a superconducting armature and a rotor with cooled permanent magnets, which seems to be a promising option for the relevant applications. A development programme that includes a 150-kilowatt 400 rpm motor is presented. A comparison with the hybrid solution shows that the density of critical current of high-critical-temperature conductors is still insufficient to be really competitive.
