Surface effects in transient heat transfer into liquid nitrogen.

Author(s) : DRACH V., SACK N., FRICKE J.

Summary

A hot-strip technique was applied to measure the temperature of the surface subjected to a heat pulse. In addition, optical methods were used. Onset of nucleate boiling temperature development and critical heat flux were investigated under transient conditions. The surface roughness and surface material were varied. It was observed that the critical heat flux is influenced by both. Onset of boiling was shifted to lower temperatures by surface roughening, whereas there was only a small effect from surface material. These results are compared with predictions from classical nucleation theory.
