THERMAL OVERFILL, DISSOLVED NON-VOLATILE IMPURITIES AND THE UNSTABLE SURFACE VAPORISATION OF CRYOGENIC LIQUIDS.

Summary

SUDDEN, AND SOMETIMES HAZARDOUS, VARIATIONS IN EVAPORATION RATES APPEAR IN CRYOTANKS. IN ORDER TO PREVENT THESE SUDDEN VARIATIONS (CAUSED BY SUPERHEATING, VAPOUR EXPLOSIONS AND ROLLOVER) IT IS NECESSARY TO KNOW THE HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER PROCESSES CONTROLLING SURFACE EVAPORATION. IN THIS PAPER < THERMAL OVERFILL > WAS USED AS STARTING POINT. TEST DATA DO CORROBORATE THE SURFACE EVAPORATION PROCESS IN THE CASE OF LIQUID NITROGEN.
