Summary

THE CRYOTANKS ARE SUBJECTED TO HEAT INPUTS CAUSING NATURAL CONVECTION MOVEMENT ALONG THE WALLS WHICH INFLUENCE FLUID STRATIFICATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF STORAGE CHARACTERISTICS WITH TIME. A MEASURING TECHNIQUE FOR NATURAL CONVECTION IS PROPOSED, BASED ON THE CALCULATION OF THE INTERCORRELATION FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS AT TWO ADJACENT POINTS. THIS TECHNIQUE USES THERMOMETRIC PROBES OF PLATINUM RESISTANCES WITH A SMALL RESPONSE TIME. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE METHOD WAS A LABORATORY TEST WITH LIQUID NITROGEN. TESTS ARE UNDER WAY ON A 500 M3 LNG TANK EQUIPPED WITH 25 MEASURING POINTS. THE PURPOSE IS TO ESTABLISH A MODEL FOR STOCK EVOLUTION IN ORDER TO PREVENT ROLL-OVER PHENOMENA.
