Summary

THE GROWTH OF YBCO SINGLE CRYSTALS ON A MELTING SURFACE UNDER GRADIENT CONDITIONS IS DESCRIBED. THE PROPERTIES OF THE SINGLE CRYSTALS IN NORMAL AND SUPERCONDUCTING STATES WERE COMPREHENSIVELY STUDIED. THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS SUGGEST THAT A MARTENSITE-TYPE PHASE TRANSITION OCCURS IN THE TEMPERATURE REGION OF 200 TO 230 K. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES AND THE THERMAL EXPANSION COEFFICIENT OF THE CERAMIC SAMPLES ARE CONTROLLED BY THERMAL ACTIVATION PROCESSES.
