Summary

ONE OF THE DISTINCT FEATURES OF A CLASS OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS IS THE SMALLNESS OF THE SUPERCONDUCTING COHERENCE LENGTH EXTRAPOLATED TO ZERO TEMPERATURE. THIS CIRCUM-STANCE PREDETERMINES THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE FLUCTUATIONS OF THE ORDER PARAMETER AND THE VERY STRONG ANISOTROPY OF THEIR MAIN SUPERCONDUCTING CHARACTERISTICS. THE PROPERTIES OF ANISOTROPIC SUPERCONDUCTORS ARE DISCUSSED: 1) AT THE LEVEL OF THE FAMILIAR GINZBURG-LANDAU MACROSCOPIC THEORY ; 2) IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE SAME THEORY BUT IN WHICH SMALL FLUCTUATION CORRECTIONS ARETAKEN INTO ACCOUNT ; AND 3) ON THE BASIS OF A GENERALIZED MACROSCOPIC THEORY OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY. IN ALL CASES THE RELATIONSHIPS, WHICH PERMIT ONE TO EXPRESS THE MOST IMPORTANT OBSERVABLE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUPERCONDUCTORS ARE PRESENTED. THE RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH THE AVAILABLE EXPERIMENTAL DATA FOR YTTRIUM-BARIUM-COPPER-OXYGEN SINGLE CRYSTALS.
