THE PAPER REPORTS INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION WHICH INFLUENCE THE LIFETIME OF A SHIP, AND REVIEWS THE OPERATING CONDITIONS WHILE STRESSING, IN PARTICULAR, MAINTENANCE, WHICH IS AN ESSENTIAL FACTOR. THE CRITICAL ELEMENTS OF THE ASSESSMENT ARE THE FOLLOWING: GENERAL SOLIDITY, RESISTANCE TO FATIGUE, ANTI-CORROSIVE PROTECTION OF THE HULL, ABILITY OF THE TANKS TO RESIST THE LOADS IMPOSED, AND RELIABILITY OF THE ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS AS WELL AS EASY REPLACEMENT IN CASE OF FAILURE OR OBSOLESCENCE.
