Summary

THE MEMBRANE TANK TECHNIQUE, WHICH IS LARGELY PROVEN, IS FIRST DETAILED. THE BEHAVIOUR OF THESE TANKS ON BOARD AN ICE-BREAKER WAS STUDIED AND TESTED, MAINLY FOR THE EFFECT OF THE EXTREME ELONGATION OF THE HULL GIRDER AND THAT OF LIQUID MOVEMENTS INSIDE THE TANKS DURING THE OPERATION AS AN ICE-BREAKER. THESE TESTS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE LIMITED CHANGES THAT PROVIDED THE SAME SAFETY AS THAT OF CONVENTIONAL METHANE CARRIERS NAVIGATING SEAS CLEAR OF ICE. J.L.
