Summary

Efficient energy production and energy storage are key elements for the energy transition. The proposed system is based on pumped-hydro technology and transcritical CO2 cycles. A slow-moving water piston pushes on (or is pushed by) a volume of CO2 through a deformable membrane to produce thermal energy, in heat pump cycle, stored in two thermal pits with an efficiency up to 79%. The organic transcritical cycle reuses this heat to produce electricity with an efficiency up to 85%. The heating plus cooling COP and RTE are respectively reaching 5.8 and 68 %. A techno-economical study determined the target price (EUR/kW) for an envisioned application. The system performance and relevance are reached through five major factors: (i) produce an isothermal compression, (ii) use passive and “stored” work for isentropic compressions, (iii) use the entire sensible heat available (iv) produce storable “high quality” heat and cold at constant power and (v) have a flexible design.
