Summary

THIS STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF TEMPERATURE INCREASES OF ICEBERG LETTUCE DURING TRANSCONTINENTAL SHIPMENTS IN TRAILERS ON RAILROAD FLATCARS. THE INTRANSIT TEMPERATURES FROM COMMERCIAL SHIPMENTS, AS AFFECTED BY LOADING PATTERNS, PALLET ARRANGEMENT, AND AIR DISTRIBUTION, ARE DISCUSSED AND COMPARED TO THE RESULTS FROM A PREVIOUS STUDY OF 10 SHIPMENTS IN REFRIGERATED HIGHWAY TRAILERS. LETTUCE THAT WAS LOADED OFF THE TRAILER FLOOR AND AWAY FROM THE WALLS HAD LOWER AVERAGE TEMPERATURES AND A SMALLER TEMPERATURE SPREAD THAN LETTUCE THAT WAS LOADED ON THE FLOOR AND THAT WAS TIGHT AGAINST THE SIDE WALLS.
