Summary

Heat transfer coefficient (HTC) knowledge is crucial to design heat exchangers which meet the heat loads required. HTCs of typical heat transfer processes have been widely studied and are well known and correlated, but the spray evaporation HTC database for refrigeration purposes is limited and values differ between works. In order to contribute to this database, we have redesigned a test rig previously used to obtain condensation and pool boiling HTCs and included a refrigerant distribution system with spray nozzles. We have defined a calculation method to determine the fraction of refrigerant flow rate reaching the studied tubes. The test rig has been successfully validated and an experimental methodology and data reduction process have been developed for the determination of spray evaporation HTCs from the experimental data. A set of tests has been carried out and the results obtained are shown and discussed.
