Summary

The author studied the tetrahydrofuran hydrate formation-decomposition characteristics outside of a heat transfer tube, compared it with those of ice. The results shown that the formation process of tetrahydrofuran hydrate has a similar super cooling degree and induction time as those of ice when the coolant direction is from up to down in a vertically placed reactor, while its formation temperature is higher than that of ice, which means the refrigeration efficiency will be improved greatly if the tetrahydrofuran hydrate is used as cool storage medium. The kinetics of tetrahydrofuran water solution with concentration higher or lower than that of stoichiometic solution (19wt%) has a bad effect on the cool storage process. Furthermore, the tetrahydrofuran water solution with concentration lower than 19wt% will form a mixture of special ice (decomposed at -1°C) and hydrate, under the cooling of -10°C or lower temperature coolant, which needs further experimental validation.
