Summary

Scroll compressors are widely used in air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and often suffer from thrust bearing wear and excessive friction losses. Although surface texturing has been proven to reduce friction and wear, its effectiveness depends on the alignment of texture parameters with actual operating conditions and components design. To design effective surface textures for the thrust bearing in scroll compressors, a tribodynamic model coupling multiple friction pairs is developed in this study to evaluate the texturing effects on tribological behavior. The results show that among various texture schemes, some can reduce friction losses while others may increase them. This is because only textures with appropriate features, such as shape, size, and distribution, can enhance the hydrodynamic effect of the oil film, increase its thickness, and thus reduce surface contact. The optimal texture scheme reduces friction work by 9.7 %, and performance tests on the actual machine verify that it can improve the overall COP by 2.94 %. This study provides a reference for improving the energy efficiency of scroll compressors by tribological design.
