THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE LIMITATIONS OF NATURAL VENTILATION US ING THE STACK EFFECT OR DRAUGHT EFFECT FOR THE AIR CONDITIONING OF ROOMS OR PREMISES SURROUNDING AN ATRIUM. THIS METHOD IS ONLY FEASIBLE WHERE BASIC LEVELS OF COMFORT ARE ACCEPTABLE. A MORE COMPLEX SOLUTION IS PROVIDED BY EXAMINING A CASE STUDY: A BANK PROJECT. IN THIS DESIGN THE ATRIA ARE VENTILATED BY REGULATED VENTILATION USING AN AIR FLOW PREDETERMINED BY MEANS OF DYNAMIC SIMULATION. THE PROBLEM OF RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND SMOKE EXTRACTION IN THE EVENT OF FIRE ARE DISCUSSED.
