THE BEN-GURION AIR TERMINAL IN LOD FOR AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS.

Author(s) : HAAS E.

Summary

SINCE THE QUALITY OF PRODUCTS IS OF MAJOR CONSIDERATION IN EXPORT, A SOPHISTICATED COOLING FACILITY WAS BUILT AT BEN-GURION AIRPORT IN ORDER TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE COOLING FOR THE PRODUCTS. THE FACILITY CAN ACCOMODATE STANDARD AIR PALLETS, CONTAINING SIX FIELD PALLETS EACH AND IT IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE CARGO TERMINAL WHICH INCLUDES TWO FORCED AIR PRECOOLING ROOMS, A COLD STORAGE ROOM, AN AIR CONDITIONED WORKING HALL FOR QUALITY CONTROL, PALLETISATION AND ALLOCATION OF PRODUCTS TO MARKETS. THE RESULTS OF TESTS SHOWED THAT THE TEMPERATURE OF CUT FLOWERS AND GRAPES CAN BE MAINTAINED AND IN SOME CASES IT ALSO CAN BE REDUCED BY 2-3 K DURING UP TO FIVE HOURS OF STORAGE. THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF THE NEW COLD STORE WAS RECORDED AND THE COST FOR EACH AIR PALLET STORED WAS CALCULATED.
