Summary

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is the industrial subset of the Internet of Things (IoT). IIoT incorporates big data technologies, harnessing the instrumentation data, machine-to-machine communication, and automation technologies that have existed in industrial settings for years. As the industry trends towards IIoT and as the LNG stations developed by Chart Industries are designed with a minimum design life of 25 years, it is imperative this technology is embedded immediately to ensure the maximum efficiency and availability.
This paper first provides the reader with a description of the Industrial Internet of Things before moving on to describe the scope of the problem for an organization like Chart Industries, which deploys multiple LNG station technologies across multiple locations. A brief analysis of how this solution differs from monitoring a single site. The paper then focuses on the critical measurements particular to high specification LNG stations. Then follows a description of how the measured information gets from the tip of the instrument in the process pipework through the different layers (based on ISA 95 framework), with a description of each layer, into the final presentation dashboard. The functions available within the presentation dashboards are taken in turn and the benefits analysed with specific focus on efficiency and availability.
The paper concludes with how by adopting the IIoT, not only can fuelling station performance be optimized by utilizing machine learning technology and pattern detection applications, but completely new business models could also be adopted.
