Summary
Refrigerated transport is becoming more important due to the growing activity of the global economy. Among other assets, food and techno-biological products represent a big challenge for refrigerated transport stakeholders, as product properties are very sensitive to temperature and, hence, temperature stability must be properly designed and ensured. Precisely, this paper attempts to estimate and validate the effects of temperature of fresh food products on commercial ground/marine transport making use of advanced storage indexes. The data is gathered by IoT devices wirelessly installed in ground/marine containers (reefers). The computing application remotely evaluates the elapsed shelf-life time and relative weight loss of the products as the transport progresses, or at the end point, depending on signal. Results from experimental tests show how these indexes can become powerful tools to quantify the storage quality, to provide objective information for management of potential incidents and to improve designs of the temperature control parameters.
