The present and future of LNG in China's road transport sector.

Summary

Since 2020, China’s LNG consumption structure has shifted drastically: the industrial sector’s share fell from 46% to 25% amid dual-carbon goals, while transportation’s rose to 49%, driven mainly by LNG-powered heavy-duty trucks (HDTs). By late 2024, LNG HDT fleet reached 847,658 units, creating over 18 million tons of annual LNG demand. Road transport is cost-sensitive, with LNG HDT sales closely linked to prices and subsidies. TCO analysis shows BEVs are most economical, followed by LNG, which excels in long-haul/heavy-load scenarios where BEVs face limitations. Though a fossil fuel, LNG outperforms diesel in emissions, and its substitution helps China’s carbon peak efforts given stable power structure before 2030. Forecasts indicate 240,000 annual LNG
HDT sales, 1.5 million fleet, and 30 million tons of LNG demand by 2030, promising broad prospects.
