The development of refrigeration expert systems.

Summary

The authors describe two IBM compatible expert systems designed for refrigeration plants. One is diagnostic and intended for troubleshooting by non-expert plant operators. Instrument readings can be entered, allowing in-built calculations to deduce correct or incorrect operation. Each application must be customized to suit the plant details. This system can be used also to train staff or to ascertain plant performance under unusual conditions. The other is a design and audit system. This includes cooling load analysis, both individual and total site loads for complex applications. Also cycle analysis in which design parameters may be optimised, single or multi-staging decided, and trade off between components explored for capital cost or energy saving. A further use is to examine operation of a given plant under non-design conditions. The compressor selection module calculates isentropic efficiencies under varied conditions and part load. A graphics module is included to produce flow diagrams. D.W.H.
