The effects of weather conditions on the cooling tower performance and the energy consumption of water chillers in Taiwan.

Author(s) : LIU C. W., CHUAH Y. K.

Summary

By using a building cooling case with typical weather conditions at the three representative weather regions of Taiwan, the study analyses the annual power consumption of the chillers and the tower fans with considerations of different condenser water temperature control methods. It was found that using the wet-bulb reset (fixed approach) control of cooling tower will result in lower condenser water temperature. Thus lower total power consumption for the chillers and cooling tower fans combined was obtained, despite the higher power consumption by the cooling tower fans for this control method. Taipei has lower wet-bulb temperatures in off-peak months and can save nearly 4% of power consumption with wet-bulb reset control.
