Summary

The electrical energy consumption of refrigerating plants in the Netherlands has been investigated. The industry and utility sectors have an electrical energy consumption of 474 PJ. Refrigeration consumes 40 PJ which is a 8.4% share. This increases to 10% when energy consumption of auxiliary equipment is taken into account. Focussing on energy savings reduces the greenhouse effect more than a further reduction of loss of containment. Energy conservation implies a further challenge for the refrigeration contractors.
