Summary

The ability of a series of N-modified betaines to reduce haemolysis of erythrocytes on freeze-thaw has been compared to that of glycin, sarcosin, N-dimethylglycin and glycin betaine. Increasing the alkylation of the nitrogen improves the optimum protection offered by these compounds. Glycinebetaine has also been shown to potentiate the effects of DMSO at low additive concentrations.
